The Family Hero

You were the child who made the family look all right. The grades, the trophies, the tidy room — whatever the currency was in your house, you earned it, and you earned it where people could see. It worked: as long as one child was visibly doing well, nobody outside had to ask questions, and inside there was one thing that was going right. That was a real job and you did it, usually long before anyone thought to thank you for it. The cost is the part you already know. Achievement became the price of being all right rather than something done for pleasure, so rest still feels like something to be earned first, and small failures land harder than they should — for a long time, getting it wrong was not available to you. The competence is real and it stays yours. What you can put down is the idea that it was ever the reason you were worth having around.
