Career & workDimensionRisk Tolerance Test — Career, Money and Social Risk

Financial risk

This dimension runs from “Protects the money” to “Bets the money”.

Level by level

What each level of Financial risk means

Bets

Money is a tool you'll put at risk rather than a store you guard. Volatile income, invested capital, borrowing against a real opportunity — you'll take positions where the downside is genuine, because the upside is only available to someone who does. The advantage here is structural rather than temperamental: returns concentrate where most people won't go, and a lifetime of guaranteed sums has a low ceiling by design. What this level asks of you is the one calculation appetite never makes on its own — the size of loss you could absorb without it changing your life. People at this level who come unstuck are rarely wrong about the opportunity; they are wrong about the size.

Balanced

You'll take financial risk in proportion, with a floor underneath it. Some money is exposed, some is untouchable, and the line between them is drawn on purpose rather than by mood. This is the level that behaves best over long stretches, mostly because it survives bad years without forcing a decision at the worst possible moment. The cost is that proportion is the enemy of concentration: the outcomes that genuinely change a financial life usually require putting more into one thing than a balanced approach allows. Whether that trade is right for you depends on what else you have, and it deserves to be decided rather than defaulted into.

Protects

You protect what you have. A reserve stays untouched, borrowing for an opportunity is off the table, and a guaranteed sum beats a larger uncertain one. That instinct does more work than it gets credit for: an intact floor is what keeps every other kind of risk survivable, and people who have one can afford to be brave in the places that matter more to them. The cost is slow and inflation-shaped — safety is paid for in small annual amounts you never watch leave — and a reserve can quietly grow past the point where it is protection and into the point where it is the whole plan.
