Speed Reading Test

How fast can you read — and still understand it?

Read a short passage at your natural pace, then tap Done to stop the clock. A few quick questions check that you actually took it in. Your reading speed only counts if you understood what you read — so no skimming. How many words a minute can you really read?

Frequently asked

How is my reading speed measured?

The clock starts when you begin reading and stops the moment you tap Done. Your speed is the number of words in the passage divided by the time you took, shown in words per minute (WPM). A few comprehension questions follow — and your speed only counts if you get enough of them right.

Why doesn't my speed count if I fail the questions?

Anyone can flick their eyes down a page in two seconds — but that isn't reading. The comprehension gate means the leaderboard rewards reading you actually understood, not speed-skimming. Miss too many questions and your speed is set to zero for that run.

What counts as a fast reading speed?

Most adults read prose at around 200 to 300 words per minute with good comprehension. Practised readers reach 400 or more. Claims of thousands of words per minute usually involve skimming, where comprehension drops sharply — which is exactly what the questions here check for.

Is this a scientific reading test?

No. It's a fun, competitive way to compare reading speed with comprehension on a single short passage. It isn't a diagnostic of reading ability or any condition, and it isn't affiliated with any speed-reading method or program. Treat your score as a game.
