The Cool Head

You reconstruct what someone else is going through with real accuracy, and neither their trouble nor their mood carries you off. This is the profile people want in the room when something has gone wrong: you can hear the whole of it, work out what is actually happening, and still be the person who knows what to do next. Accuracy without absorption is also what makes hard conversations possible — you can say the true thing precisely because you're not drowning in the reaction to it. The exposure is that understanding is not the same as warmth, and from outside the two are almost impossible to tell apart until they diverge. Someone who is understood exactly but not particularly cared about tends to feel handled rather than helped, and usually can't explain why. The cheapest correction isn't more feeling — it's saying the caring part out loud, because your face is not going to say it for you.
